The Injured Athletes Club

Jul 21, 2022

“While I am not a professional athlete, I am a chef who has gone from 1 hour intense daily workouts and working 10 to 14 hours a day to doing nothing. Exactly one month ago today I fully tore my pectoral major off my humerus while bench pressing. I am itching to finally have my surgery completed this upcoming Monday.

I'm hoping you can provide me with some insight and guidance. Everyday I find myself in a battle with my monster and athlete. I know what I have to do to control my monster, but it is really exhausting having continuous arguments between the two. It feels like rationally I have the answers for all the nagging questions and concerns, but deep down they keep replaying like a fricken broken record: ‘Look how much you have atrophied’, ‘Sitting here not working, seems so useless’, ‘What if they damage my nerve in surgery?’ Blah blah blah. How do I get this record to stop?”

This week, co-host and mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question from listener Gavin.

You can’t always control your inner monster, she points out—but you don’t have to buy into its arguments. Instead, you can recognize that that voice is often acting out of fear, and enlist the athlete inside you to calmly and patiently talk the monster down. While they’re engaged, aim to coach yourself through the next phase of your recovery.
