The Injured Athletes Club

Aug 11, 2022

"At first it was a bit difficult, talking about it and reliving it, but now I see how powerful that can be. You wouldn't believe how many stories I hear. I swear every time somebody crashes really bad on their bike, they reach out to me. It’s incredible—I don't think people realize that about themselves when they reach out, but literally they will be in the hospital messaging me, ‘How did you get through this? How quickly did you come back?’ I say, ‘if you’re already thinking about it, that right there goes to show how strong you are. If you want to come back, you will once you're clear.’”

The first time she lined up for a triathlon in 2013, Sika Henry was hooked—but she noticed something out on the course. Or rather, she noticed what wasn’t there: any other people of color competing alongside her.

From that moment, she dedicated herself to becoming the first Black woman to earn her pro card in the sport, hoping to show others what was possible. A serious bike crash during a race in 2019 nearly derailed her. But with such a powerful mission, she returned to finish what she started.

In this week’s episode, Sika shares the key question from her dad, and the messages from fans, that kept her moving; the creative solutions her coach developed to help her train during recovery; and more about her efforts to increase diversity in the sport through efforts such as the Ironman Foundation’s Race For Change initiative
